Touch gestures
| What you want | iPad | Android |
|---|---|---|
| Turn the page | Scroll | Tap the left or right third of the page, or press the volume keys |
| Show or hide the menus | Tap the page; in Reading Mode, the round pen-tip button on the right edge | Tap the middle of the page (shows or hides the buttons, the tool rail and the footer) |
| Zoom | Pinch | Pinch, or double-tap (2.5×, double-tap again to go back) |
| Select text | Long-press a word, then drag the handles | Long-press a word, then drag the handles |
| Put a sticky note | Choose the Sticky note tool, then tap the page | Choose the Sticky note tool and tap, or long-press an empty spot |
| Switch papers | Swipe sideways from the edge of the screen | Swipe sideways from the edge of the screen |
- When you are zoomed in on Android, a tap at the side does not turn the page; zoom out first.
- For more on switching papers, see Open papers and switching.
Apple Pencil (iPad)
- Turn on Ink ON in the status bar at the bottom (on iPhone, at the top right next to undo), then write with Apple Pencil (or a finger). Turn it off to use highlights, sticky notes and the other tools again. See Handwriting.
- Double-tap (Apple Pencil 2) and squeeze (Apple Pencil Pro) follow your iPad's Apple Pencil settings: switch to the eraser, go back to the previous tool, or show the palette.
- The palette has a pen, the HL Pen, an eraser and a button that turns handwriting off.
- With a Pencil that supports hover, a ring shows the color and width before you touch the page.
- In Reading Mode, double-tap or squeeze also shows or hides the menus.
Stylus (Android)
- Tap Ink ON in the footer, then choose the Pen in the tool rail. See Handwriting.
- Hold the pen's button while you write to erase.
- Settings › Reader › Draw with the stylus only: fingers scroll and select, and only the pen draws or erases.
- Settings › Reader › Pen button chooses what a press of the button does while the pen hovers: Toggle eraser, Previous tool or Do nothing.
- In Reading Mode, the pen and eraser also work with a finger.
E Ink tablets
- Rectoly recognizes E Ink devices and uses settings that suit them: one page at a time, the footer shown from the start, and no bouncing scroll.
- It also makes text larger, buttons easier to tap, and grey text and dividers darker, so settings, lists and menus are easier to read.
- Settings › Reader › E Ink optimisation turns this on or off. Settings you have chosen yourself stay as they are.
Left-handed layout
- Settings › Reader › Left-handed controls puts the tool rail on the right and the menus on the left.
- Left-handed (controls on the left) in the reader's settings moves the floating buttons to the left side and the tool rail to the right.
On Windows
Windows treats a touch screen and a pen like a mouse: tap to click, drag to select. You can write with a pen or a finger using the Pen tool. See Mouse, right-click and drag.
